Malik hails Champions Trophy verdict

By K. Hussain. Sindh, Pakistan, 09:01 PM IST

Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik Thursday hailed the International Cricket Council (ICC) over its decision to keep September's Champions Trophy in Pakistan in spite of security concerns.

'It would have been a great loss for Pakistan cricket had the Champions Trophy been taken away from here,' Malik said. 'I'm thankful to the cricket world for taking a decision that is great for the sport in this country,' he added.

The ICC Thursday decided to retain Pakistan as the Champions Trophy hosts following a tele-conference between representatives of the ten full ICC members. The decision was taken in spite of fears expressed by some of the competing nations in the 'better interest of world cricket'.

Malik assured that all Champions Trophy participants will be completely safe in Pakistan which will be hosting the eight-nation tournament from Sept 11-28.

'Anybody who has been to Pakistan knows how much we love sports,' Malik said. 'I'm sure that players and officials coming for the Champions Trophy will have a memorable time here.'
