Two killed in Uttar Pradesh poll violence

From correspondents in Uttar Pradesh, India, 12:31 AM IST

Two people were killed and five injured in separate incidents of violence in Uttar Pradesh Friday during the final round of polling in the three-phased civic elections.

The deceased were identified as Congress activist Jabbar and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) volunteer Avanish Yadav.

According to an official spokesman, the two men were killed in separate incidents in Mainpuri district in firing between rival groups.

Jabbar was gunned down during an armed clash between Congress and Samajwadi Party activists in Karhal town, while Yadav died in an exchange of fire between BSP and Samajwadi Party workers in Ghirore.

Jabbar's killing sparked off violent retaliation and arson in which a vehicle in the motorcade of Mainpuri MP Dharmendra Yadav was set ablaze.

The free-for-all that continued for quite some time left two other people injured.

Violence in Bewar town of the same district left three people seriously injured. They have been shifted to the Agra Medical College.
