Jayalalitha threatens boycott of Chennai civic re-polls

From correspondents in Tamil Nadu, India, 02:33 AM IST

AIADMK supremo and former Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalitha Friday threatened to boycott the Feb 5 Chennai Corporation re-elections unless the state Election Commissioner T. Chandrasekaran was sacked.

Last week, Justice Ibrahim Kalifulla, one of the judges in a division bench of the Madras High Court, recommended that re-election should be held in 99 wards due to massive rigging and other electoral malpractices.

Spurred by these developments, AIADMK chief and former chief minister Jayalalitha said: 'If the re-elections are to be conducted by state Election Commissioner Chandrasekaran, who was (allegedly) responsible for electoral malpractices witnessed during last year's civic polls it would be a historic mistake.'

She said the entire opposition consisting of the AIADMK and MDMK would boycott any future civic polls as long as Chandrasekaran continued in office.

Meanwhile DMK president and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi asked 99 councillors belonging to his party, the PMK, Congress and Dalit Panthers of India to tender their resignation, including Mayor of Chennai - M.A. Subramanian.
