Sonia says attackers are 'enemies of humanity'

From correspondents in Delhi, India, 01:32 PM IST

Congress president Sonia Gandhi Monday condemned a terror attack on the 'peace train' between India and Pakistan and called people of both countries to stand firmly against 'enemies of humanity'.

Gandhi described the twin blasts, which killed at least 66 people and injured 50, as 'a barbaric act of violence'.

The bombs exploded a little after midnight in the Atari Express at Diwana village, 10 km from Panipat in Haryana, while on its way to Atari, 25 km ahead of Amritsar in Punjab, for an onward journey on the Samjhauta Express to Lahore.

In a message issued by the ruling party headquarters here, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson appealed 'to the people of India and Pakistan to stand up firmly against such enemies of humanity'.

The bombings - apparently triggered by improvised explosive devices (IED) - are seen as an attempt to derail the peace process between India and Pakistan. Foreign-minister level talks between the two countries are set to resume in New Delhi Tuesday.
