Congress MP quits party, blames Rahul's 'coterie'

From correspondents in Delhi, India, 12:30 PM IST

Former minister and Congress' Rajya Sabha MP Akhilesh Das Tuesday resigned from the party, blaming the 'coterie' around party general secretary Rahul Gandhi for the move.

Das, a former minister of state for steel who was known as a close confidant of Rahul Gandhi, had been dropped from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's council of ministers last month.

Das told a television channel that the Congress party no longer functioned on the 'one man one post' rule.

Mr Das deserves pity for not knowing the truth which he seems to have realized only now. Of course, rules are not sacrosanct, since they can be circumvented or cheated by some trick or the other when it is determined to favour a member at a suitable opportunity. There have always been coteries,ex. for Indira, Rajeev, Sonia, not only Rahul, Gandhi. Also, some too innocent Congressmen believe their party shares any Gandhian ideals.
