Karunanidhi in hospital, but well: Stalin

From correspondents in Tamil Nadu, India, 12:01 AM IST

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's son M.K. Stalin Friday said that his father, who was hospitalised following a neck pain in the morning, was otherwise well and resting under medical advice.

'The chief minister has decided to take some rest on medical advice and will be discharged soon from hospital. Else, he is hale and hearty. Rumours suggesting otherwise are mischievous,' Stalin, the state's local administration minister, said in a statement.

Rumours about Karunanidhi's deteriorating health created a minor flutter here in the evening.

The DMK leader, who turns 84 next month, was admitted to a private hospital in the morning after he complained of neck pain.

'There was some pain in his neck and keeping his age in mind no chances were taken. He is not in any danger and may be discharged after a day of observation," an aide in the chief minister's office said earlier.

In a statement issued on behalf of Karunanidhi, party workers were requested to accord 'privacy and rest' to the DMK patriarch.

Pray for his health, he should come back for the welfare of Tamilnadu. May god bless him.

Mr Karunanidhi is a very untypical politician of India, continuously obsessed with religious and other private aspects of life to use them in his politics. But in a democracy, even such ideological perversions must be debated. Hence we wish Mr K early recovery of physical health.
