Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has allotted portfolios to his ministers nine days after assuming office and kept with him 10 departments, including finance and the intelligence wing of the home ministry.
The home portfolio minus the intelligence wing has been given to his trusted man V.S. Acharya, while the mining magnates from iron-ore rich Bellary district, G. Karunakara Reddy and his brother G. Janardhana Reddy, have revenue, and tourism and infrastructure development respectively.
The Reddy brothers, who helped secure the support of at least three of the six independents enabling the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to get majority, were keen on home, mines and forest departments.
Katta Subramanya Naidu, another Yeddyurappa loyalist, has got the high-profile information technology and bio-technology portfolio along with excise and information department.
The lone woman in the 31-member cabinet, Shobha Karandlaje, has been allotted rural development, panchayati raj and rural water supply.
Mumtaz Ali Khan, the only Muslim in the cabinet, has been made minister for wakf, haj and minorities' welfare.
The list was finalised late Saturday night and Governor Rameshwar Thakur issued the notification allotting the portfolios well past midnight.

As of June 2008, there seem to be some good signs of KN administration being shocked out of sleep by the BJP govt., witness the many Bangalore city roads being done up with tarring and made motorable, and the like.
The BJP partey must come to this Tamil Nadu state as well. It is going to the dogs as DMK party pupil are looting all the jeuwelleriess in the temples in the full Tamilnadu. and many other criminall things.Brammins were doing good job in the Puja etc.at the temples, so why they wanting dirtey and undisciplined pupil to do this. and not thousands of jobs are there.
Comment of Mr Iyer on this news is worth an illustration: Go to a govt. office like Subregistrar's. Right to information appears to be given there a superficial respect. The computer is most of the times without any govt.staff being available even to illiterate people wanting information. Or it is malfunctioning. Or the information is so badly programmed you return dismayed nor does any approach to a superior help. Above all, if at all you succeed in getting info on say official market rates for carpet area of flat you buy is far below actual you pay,but you pay a hefty bribe of '000s of Rs. thru broker/lawyer to the office to secure your registration. What use RTI, vigilance officers, etc. It is all a mockery.
Mr Yeddyurappa may have passed a critical stage in getting going with governance of Karnataka, with this portfolio allocation. Some of the major issues are Urban infrastructure devlopment (road, water, electricity, public conveniences)including airport connectivity, which are long neglected, and rooting out high corruption and inefficiency in property transactions by real estate goons and registration offices which have defined all administrative actions due to alleged politicians' connivance. Not to speak of redressal farm sector grievances and industry problems and exploitation by miners, and general administrative unresponsiveness and non-proactive behaviour, despite availability of high tech (IT and telecom).
People in general, except those in ministers' MLA constituencies,do not know them personally re:their capability and integrity, but CERTAINLY want them to understand their fields and perform with integrity, transparency and efficiency.Kudos for Mr Yeddy for making this good start.
