Mayawati inducts Dharmraj Nishad as cabinet minister

From correspondents in Uttar Pradesh, India, 07:00 PM IST

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati Wednesday inducted Dharmraj Nishad in her ministry after the arrest of former minister Jamuna Nishad, who led a protesting mob that killed a policeman.

Dharmraj Nishad, a lawmaker from the Katehari constituency, was sworn in as a cabinet minister with independent charge. He has not been allotted any department.

Sacked minister Jamuna Nishad was the lone representative of the Nishad community in Mayawati's ministry. He was removed after his name figured in a criminal case in which a police constable was shot dead in Maharajganj district Saturday last.

Jai Prakash Nishad, a former legislator, has been made the president of the State Integration Council and has been given the status of a minister of state.
