Strike in Kashmir against Friday's police action

From correspondents in India, 02:30 PM IST

Shops and business establishments in capital Srinagar and other towns remained closed in the strike called by the two factions of Hurriyat Conference.

Public transport was off the roads, but skeletal private transport was seen plying on the roads here.

Shabir Shah and other Hurriyat supporters were injured in police baton charge during a demonstration in Hazratbal locality of the state's summer capital.

State authorities have made elaborate security arrangements in Srinagar to maintain law and order.

Meanwhile, 20-year-old Feroze Ahmad Khan, who was injured last week during the ten day long protests in capital against the forest land allotment to Sri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), succumbed to his wounds in hospital here Saturday morning.

This takes the toll of those killed during the protests to six while over 500 others were wounded.
