Victory celebrations continue outside Sonia's residence

From correspondents in Delhi, India, 08:30 PM IST

The road outside Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi's residence here Wednesday was again packed with hundreds of party workers bursting fire crackers, distributing sweets and waving party flags as they celebrated the government's trust vote victory Tuesday.

Gandhi met Congress Working Committee (CWC) members, general secretaries and office-bearers throughout the day and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also came to meet her at her 10 Janpath residence.

Cabinet ministers lined up at her residence to congratulate the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson.

Outside her residence, there were hundreds of party workers, waving Congress flags, and raising slogans in support of Gandhi and Manmohan Singh.

Many broke into impromptu jig to the beat of drums, and many more were seen distributing sweets. A supporter held a balloon in the shape of an atom bomb, with the slogan, "The nuclear deal is important for our energy", written on it.

Colourful placards and posters were carried by many others eager to meet and congratulate personally the Congress chief, but were held back by the large posse of security men outside the gate. The road was also barricaded for traffic as workers spilled out to celebrate the momentous occasion - the first trust vote victory of the UPA government.

Congress sources said leaders of the UPA allies, who ensured that the government victory, were also meeting Gandhi later in the evening.

The Congress workers may assume that they are justified in celebrating the survival of government after the confidence motion. But they will do well to remember that their phony supporter, the Communists, have threatened to disrupt life all over country with campaigning againt the nuke deal.
