Arjun Singh in ICU with multiple health problems

From correspondents in Delhi, India, 04:31 PM IST

Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Arjun Singh has been admitted to the ICU at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for gall bladder stones, left ventricular failure and a host of other problems.

The senior Congress leader, 78, went to AIIMS Wednesday night and was moved to the ICU Thursday.

"He was admitted to our hospital at 10 p.m. Wednesday night. He was diagnosed with acute cholecystitis meaning gall bladder stone associated with diabetes and left ventricular failure," AIIMS medical superintendent D.K. Sharma told IANS.

The heart has four chambers and the lower two chambers are called ventricular chambers.

"He is also suffering from coronary artery disease, diabetic nephropathy (kidney related problems) and chronic obstructive airways disease," Sharma added.

Sharma, however, said there was "nothing to worry" about the condition of the minister who has a history of diabetes.

When asked if Arjun Singh was going to be operated upon for gall bladder stones, Sharma said: "Not right now. If he was just suffering from gall bladder stone problem, we could have gone for a surgery straight away but the associated ailments are a problem."

A multidisciplinary team of doctors headed by T.K. Chattopadhyay, head of the department of gastrointestinal surgery, and Chandra Lekha, head of the department of intensive care, is attending on the minister.
