Sonia speaks to Rajnath on Jammu protests

From correspondents in Delhi, India, 04:00 AM IST

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi Sunday night discussed with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh the situation in Jammu after violent protests over land for the Amarnath shrine board, Congress sources said.

Gandhi, who called up Singh over telephone, urged him to ask BJP cadre to help restore peace in Jammu and also not to politicise the issue, the party sources added.

Five towns, including Jammu, have been placed under curfew as the agitation continued demanding the restoration of a Jammu and Kashmir government order providing 40 hectares of forest land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board.
