PM condoles deaths of children in Karnataka

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday condoled the death of seven children who drowned when their school van fell into a river in Karnataka's west coast town of Mangalore.

The prime minister announced a compensation of Rs.100,000 for the families of each of the deceased and Rs.50,000 for each of the injured.

At least seven children, aged between seven and 10, and four adults drowned Thursday morning when the school van plunged into the overflowing Phalguni river, about 10 km from Mangalore.

Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa Thursday announced compensation of Rs.100,000 to the families of the victims.
