West Bengal government to send letter to Mamata

From correspondents in West Bengal, India, 08:02 PM IST

The West Bengal government is likely to send a letter to Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee Monday evening inviting her to a dialogue to resolve the dragging Singur land row.

According to official sources, the letter will be sent to Singur, where Banerjee is holding an indefinite siege protesting the takeover of 400 acres of farmland for Tata Motors' Nano car project in Singur.

'In the letter, the government will request her to arrive at a solution,' an official said.

Trinamool Congress supporters began an indefinite protest at the Nano factory site Sunday.

They are demanding the return of 400 acres of land which they allege was forcibly taken from unwilling farmers to build ancillary industries adjacent to the main plant.

A total of 997.11 acres was acquired. Of this, 691.66 acres belonged to farmers who gave up their land willingly.
