A day-long function organised last year by the Punjab government to mark the birth centenary of one of India's best known freedom martyr, Bhagat Singh, cost the taxpayers a whopping Rs.30 million (Rs.3 crore), a Right to Information (RTI) Act query has revealed.12:01 PM on January 06
Rs.3 cr.worth of celebration, or even somewhat more, considering whopping costs of various elements of expenditure, seems justifiable for celebrating and paying homage to the memory of great patriots like Shahid Bhagat Singh. It is a one time expenditure, moreover. It will be a more meaningful duty of organizations such as Nawanshahr to use the RTI to extract official information in respect of poll expenditures and make proper estimates for the understatements of poll candidates especially of the major parties, and publish them. This will be a daunting task but it is worth doing, and the orgzns.concerned will be kept engaged for doing a sensible job in the direction of cleansing our degenerating polity.
