In a bid to generate rural employment opportunities, GMR Group today launched a security services training academy in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh.
The academy will be run by Bangalore-based Raxa Security Services Bangalore, an ISO 9001:2000 certified Company formed by GMR Group. It has come up on a 100-acre plot at Kodikonda on the Bengaluru – Hyderabad National Highway (NH-7) with an initial investment of Rs. 35 crore.
The Company was formed by GMR Group to provide consultancy services for integrated security solutions for Business and Industrial establishments.
Security Services Industry in the country is a sunrise industry and is valued at around Rs. 4500 crore. A significant section, over 60% of this, is in the unorganised sector. However, the organised sector is expected to grow at around 20 – 25 % annually.
The academy was formally inaugurated by Group Chairman Mr. G.M. Rao along with his wife, Mrs. Varalakshmi, at a function at Kodikonda which also marked the passing out of a new batch of 175 trained security personnel. The programme was attended by security professionals, employees of GMR Group, district officials and local villagers from whom Raxa purchased land for the Academy.
Speaking at the occasion, Mr. G. M. Rao said: “Raxa Security Services will give preference to local villagers for employment opportunities. The group’s Corporate Social Responsibility arm, GMR Varalakshmi Foundation will also undertake identified welfare projects in the surrounding villages.”
The Academy will impart induction training to Marshals (eight weeks duration for matriculates) and security supervisors (10 weeks duration for graduates), in addition to organising refresher training programmes. The Academy with a capacity to train 200 recruits in each batch is equipped with modern training facilities which include a parade ground, an athletics ground, sports grounds, swimming pool, gymnasium, simulator for firing practice, miniature firing range, technical wing, computer lab and a driving track. Further, the Academy has experienced faculty members inducted from army / police forces with expertise in security services including industrial and aviation security, fire safety and disaster management.
