Radio One, the Ekdum Fataafat Station, celebrates the 25th anniversary of India’s historic cricket World Cup win in England with a day long campaign titled “Replay 1983”. Taking a walk back in sepia-tinted time, the station brings alive the drama of the period, with cricketers from Kapil Dev’s 1983 team reliving moments from the glorious match against West Indies on air. Listeners can also catch interviews of cricketing legends, stars and some old timers as they talk about their experience of the World Cup, all through the day.
From the point of losing the toss and being asked to bat first against a West Indies team that arguably boasted the world's best bowling attack, the day was filled with great cricketing drama for the entire nation. Only Mohinder Amarnath (26 from 80 balls) and Kris Srikanth (38 from 57 balls) put up any significant resistance as Roberts, Marshall, Joel Garner and Michael Holding ripped through the Indian batsmen, ably supported by Gomes. However India’s spectacular bowling effort with Madan Lal and Amarnath’s three wickets and Kapil Dev running a great distance to take a catch to dismiss Richards, the West Indies top scorer turned the tide and created an unforgettable day for all cricket lovers.
To celebrate this anniversary in style, the station will enter a sort of time machine, playing retro music from the 70s and 80s all day, along with a whole host of segments to add to the flavour of the celebration. In Bangalore for instance, Radio One will have “LIVE” ball-to-ball updates on the match, and callers can call in to wish the team the very best. Fashion gurus will share tips on how to dress in keeping with the times, i.e. retro, wearing boot cuts, bobby prints, flirt skirts and all that’s trendy. Even gossip takes a retro turn on the station today, with RJs talking about Amitabh and Rekha’s steamy affair, Mithun seeing Ranjeeta etc.
Radio One Mumbai will have guests such as Amin Sayani in their studio talking about the world cup, and news updates will be also taken from the 80’s with a focus on Indira Gandhi as PM and more.
Says Raj Gopal Iyer, Station Head, West, Radio One, “Radio One is positioned as the Ekdum Fataafat station, and our focus is on providing that instant connect to whatever’s really relevant for our urban audiences. The 1983 cricket win is a historic and unforgettable one that we are delighted to celebrate it in this light hearted and creative way.”
Says Shyju Varkey, Station Head, Radio One, Bangalore, “Cricket is one of the biggest passion areas for our listeners. Through this celebration, Radio One brings one of the finest moments in Indian cricketing history alive for listeners in an unforgettable way.”
