Cape Town Honoured as Third Best City in the World in Travel Survey

From correspondents in Delhi, India, 01:48 PM IST

Travel and Leisure magazine performed the survey among its readership to compile its 2008 World's Best Awards, identifying the best cities, hotels, islands, airlines and cruises in the world for this year. The survey also determined the best according to regions.

Cape Town took the third spot on the list of the world’s best cities after Bangkok and Buenos Aires.

Table Mountain dominates the city, along with Lion's Head, Signal Hill and Devil's Peak. Cape Town's heart is known as the City Bowl and has some of South Africa's oldest and most modern real estate. Wonderful restaurants, nightclubs, bars, churches and mosques abound.

The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront shopping centre and working harbour is South Africa's most popular destination. Sun International’s Table Bay Hotel enjoys iconic status with arguably the best location on the V & A Waterfront and scored an 89.23% rating in the Travel and Leisure top 100.

This five-star hotel is set in perfect harmony with its magnificent surroundings - Table Mountain, the historic working harbour and yacht bay of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Its maritime flavour extends to each room and suite, which has sea or mountain views and is a luxurious port of call.

Shop in arcade after arcade, visit the Two Oceans Aquarium, take boat and harbour cruises and helicopter trips around the peninsular. The V&A Waterfront provides an extensive programme of events and activities. From the Table Bay Hotel lobby there is direct access to the V&A Waterfront shopping malls. The busy mall houses many global brands especially in the newly created Victoria Wharf fashion wing where you will find a new generation Spitz shoe store which houses top international brands such as Kurt Geiger, Carvela, Geox and DKNY – enough to set any shoe-a-holic’s heart aflutter. Fashionistas are indulged at Chopard, Jimmy Choo, Gucci, Ana Sousa, Byblos, Ben Sherman, Ed Hardy, Louis Vuitton, Max Mara, and Replay.

Take a break from shopping at the Table Bay Hotel and enjoy the expansive drawing-rooms, high ceilings, huge French windows looking out at sea and the working harbour. Relax with a glass of champagne or enjoy a lavish high tea whilst taking in the harbour front views.

The Hotel’s maritime flavour extends to each room and suite, which has sea or mountain views. Each room has a liberating sense of space and luxury. Designed to inspire, its beauty connects you with the surrounding environment, while ensuring your every comfort and convenience.

“We are delighted to be on Travel and Leisure’s Best Hotels worldwide. It is indeed a great honour. Sun International strives to deliver an extraordinary experience at The Table Bay Hotel,” says General Manager Philip Couvaras. “It is also wonderful that Cape Town has been nominated as the third best city in the world, a worthy accolade.”

With the upcoming 2010 World Cup Soccer plans well under way, this award makes Cape Town a ‘must see’ city of choice over this time.
