'Kawarias' service camps told to keep off highways

From correspondents in Haryana, India, 11:01 PM IST

Authorities here Saturday ordered that service camps for 'kawarias' (Lord Shiva devotees) be set up at least 100 metres from highways.

The order, under section 144 of the CrPC, comes in wake of the death of a few kawarias in road accidents last year that led to violence by the devotees and blocking of some of the highways.

According to the order, the district magistrate directed that the service camps should be set up 100 metres from the Delhi-Jaipur National Highway and should be 50 metres away from other state highways.

A spokesman of the administration said the orders had been issued in public interest so that traffic movement in the district remained smooth.
