Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa Tuesday said attacks on churches and prayer halls in the coastal city of Mangalore and other places in the state were a fallout of conversion activities in those areas.
'The attacks took place in areas where conversion activity was on,' Yeddyurappa told reporters after meeting with senior civil and police officials on the violent incidents in Mangalore, around 350 kms from here.
He said the government would enquire into charges by pro-Hindu groups that some organisations were receiving foreign funds to carry out conversions in the state.
'The government will not allow forcible conversions. The constitution does not permit it,' Yeddyurappa added.
The chief minister condemned the Sunday attacks on churches and prayer halls and said no group should take the law into its hands.
'What is the government for? If such activity (conversions) is taking place, it should be brought to the notice of the government,' he maintained.
Yeddyurappa rejected the opposition parties' demand for a judicial probe into Sunday's attacks in Mangalore, the headquarters of Dakshina Kannada district.
Around 10 churches and prayer halls were damaged in the attack and the Christians' protest Monday turned violent as they clashed with Hindu groups and police.
More than 170 persons have been arrested by police, around 50 of them for the attack on the churches and the rest in connection with Monday's violence.

Our central goverment is not taking enogh steps to attack terorism. They are suprted by maney parties which depand on Muslim votes and does not want to punnish terorists as because they are allways Muslims. So they must not prevant if some patriot organisations or state leval govermens wants to catch those who are responsible. If these thigs are not done, it means we must all live due to terorism.
There is no doubt that the conversions lie at the root of these very bad incidents. The people do not have any feelings of animosity on religious basis. But propaganda is not all the time about Jesus' principles but also about decrying Hinduism itself. As far as Hindus are concerned, Jesus will one day be idolized even as a cross, in Hindu temples along with its numerous saints.
In West Bengal, the news hogging is by Ms.Banerji now, but in Karnataka it is Deve Gowda ALL THE TIME, since he is still dreaming of JDS to realize Karnataka becoming a mere serfdom under himself and his son. He asks for list of conversions which were made by Xian missionaries during the "180 days" rule of BJP. Is he such a forgetful moron not remembering that lakhs were converted with his blessings so that, in his calculation, all of them would vote his party to power with his beloved son as its chief.
The Hindu majority has been divided on a communal basis, each partiy posturing to champion a few castes, and appealing to the others for gaining power through polls. This is of course not the way to eradicate casteism which anyway few practice, knowing little of the traditional rules. To this you add Christian conversion for poverty removal although this is a govt. job outside our politicians' calibre.Result : Violence, which will degenerate into terrorism.
The nation has been already 'divided' successfully by politicians with the real motive for ruling the masses (and making a fast buck for themselves in the event.) The missionary virulence of conversion is a curse coming on top of the above, and innocents on both sides lose lives in crossfire. But the politicians hypocritically divided as secular and nonsecular will never for the loss of lives in their power game. Banning of conversions (which is not the same as freedom of religion) and freezing religious populations as they are, will do be a national service for strengthening unity and using our energies to national building.
