From correspondents in Delhi, India, 10:02 PM IST

President Pratibha Patil Friday greeted the nation on the occasion of Bakr Eid, saying that the festival 'enriches our composite culture'.

In her message, she said: 'On the auspicious occasion of Idu'l Zuha, I extend my greetings and good wishes to all my fellow citizens.'

'May this festival enrich our composite culture and strengthen our unity and harmony and inspire us to work for the wellbeing of all,' she said.

Bakr Eid or Idu'l Zuha is one of the most important festivals in the Muslim calendar. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son on Allah's command. According to Islamic belief, Allah wanted to test Ibrahim and told him to sacrifice his son Ismail.

It is being celebrated in north India Saturday.

Vice-president Hamid Ansari also extended his warm greetings on the festival.

'This festival commemorates the spirit of sacrifice shown by Prophet Ibrahim and reaffirms the truth that from man's complete willingness to sacrifice, springs divine grace and compassion,' Ansari said.

'May the noble spirit of the day bring lasting happiness to mankind,' he added.
