World No.2 Rafael Nadal has his sights firmly on a medal at the Beijing Olympics.
'Olympics are the most important alongside the four Grand Slams and since it happens once in four years, there's a special motivation for it,' Nadal told reporters on the eve of the ATP Chennai Open tennis tournament here Monday.
Steffi Graf is the only player to have achieved a Golden Grand Slam of winning all four majors besides the gold medal at the Olympics, and Nadal also wants to be on the podium at Beijing.
'I don't think I can win the full Grand Slam in a year. Last year, I won the French Open and reached the final in Wimbledon. But right now, I am here in Chennai and this is a good tournament,' he said.
Nadal asserted that he was in prime physical condition despite media speculation to the contrary. He reiterated that he did not have any injury problem and that he was fully focused on a New Year and especially the Olympics.
'I don't want to speak about injuries. Papers write something that is not 100 per cent true. I feel 100 per cent fine,' he said in reference to his fitness.
Reverting to the new season, Nadal said he would like to play some doubles to as it helps him remain in top physical condition.
'This will be the first tournament of the year. It is important I play doubles for practice. I like doubles a lot and when I can, I play a lot of doubles. This year there is special significance because of the Olympic Games.
'When I feel 100 per cent physically and mentally fine, I play both. Olympics is after the four Grand Slams. The Davis Cup is also there, but importantly, there is Olympics and it is a special tournament and sure is a special motivation,' Nadal said summing up his targets for 2008.
In reference to his 121 consecutive weeks of being No.2 to Roger Federer, the 21-year old Spaniard said he wouldn't mind remaining in that position for 'another 50 years' so long as he is playing better.
'I'm not bothered about Roger, I want to play better tennis and become a better player. When I say a better player I don't mean rankings or points. I don't mind being No 2 for another 50 years,' he said.
Looking ahead to the Chennai Open and his chances of winning the title that eluded him last year when he lost to Xavier Malisse in the semi-finals, Nadal said: 'This year there are very good players. Moya, Baghdatis, Youzhny and Malisse. It is an interesting tournament. I want to enjoy a very nice week. I expect a tough fight because the level is very good. I don't know who is going to win.'
When queried about match-fixing in tennis, Nadal gave the sport a clean chit. 'I see tennis being played every day and am 100 per cent confident of my friends and other players. If it all it (match-fixing) exists, the ATP is fighting it. As for as I am concerned, it doesn't exist. The press and everyone are speaking about it. Tennis is the fairest sport.'
