Three people, including two opposition leaders, were killed and over a dozen injured in a blast in Sri Lanka's north-central town of Anuradhapura, defence officials said.

Maj. Gen (Retired) Janaka Perera, who is a member of the main opposition United National Party (UNP), his wife and another opposition member were killed in the blast.

It was not immediately confirmed whether it was a suicide attack by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, as had been mentioned in initial reports.
