Self-employment project for women by scientist body

From correspondents in Uttar Pradesh, India, 07:02 PM IST

In order to make rural women of Uttar Pradesh self-employed , a scientist body here has initiated a training project, officials said Monday.

Scientists at the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP), Lucknow have launched a pilot project to train rural women for self employment.

'CIMAP has undertaken a programme to train rural women in making herbal products like incense sticks, rose water and other products,' said A.K. Singh, a CIMAP scientist.

Initially, the programme was launched for villages in Lucknow and Barabanki districts.

'We have, however, invited rural women from all parts of the state to attend our training programme,' he added.

According to scientists, at present about 100 women from Pratapgarh, Ghazipur, Varanasi, Rae Bareli, Lucknow and Barabanki districts are undergoing training.

'The main objective behind the training programme is to make rural women self-reliant, which in turn will help them to lead a better life,' said Singh.

CIMAP is governed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

Herbal products like incense sticks, rose water and other products which people of the CIMAP want to 'train' rural women for self employment, are really very commonplace items for which the production techniques are available easily even from the dozens of their existing makers. The Inst.could however impart training in better the use of better materials and processes resulting in better products to gain some Unique selling point (USP)in selling the product in the market.Knowledge of finance (small amounts) reqd.and its ready sourcing without being harassed by bank rules also will need to be provided, if this laudable program has to be really meaningful.Question is whether CIMAP men as lab men will be able to do this without some augmentation of skill for this.
