Kerala readies for Onam tourists

From correspondents in Kerala, India, 06:00 PM IST

With the Kerala government pumping in millions into Onam celebrations, a large number of foreign and domestic tourists are expected to arrive to witness the weeklong festivities beginning Sep 10.

State Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan Wednesday said according to his information many hotels had got good bookings.

'During the Onam season, domestic tourists outnumber foreign tourists simply because a large number of Malayalis settled outside the state make it a point to come back to celebrate the festival,' said Balakrishnan.

The state government is putting in Rs.8.5 million for celebrations in the capital city, while Kochi and Kozhikode will get Rs.2.5 million each and the 11 other districts will get Rs.100,000 each.

The weeklong function will include staging of the traditional art forms and also Kalaripayattu, a martial art form from the state.

Unlike previous years, this city will witness colourful tableux on the occasion - something that had been suspended for several years.

'Close to 70 floats will pass through the main roads on Sep 16, the last day of the weeklong Onam celebrations,' said Balakrishnan.
